Tech. Sgt. Michel Blake, 337th Recruiting Squadron recruiter assigned to Durham N.C., joined the Air Force nearly 10 years ago because he was tired of living a small farming community in Iowa.

"I wanted to broaden my experiences," he said. "I was looking for help to pay for my education and I also wanted to learn an exciting career."

Blake also found inspiration to serve his country from the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

"I remember feeling very angry watching the news that morning," he said. "That moment totally solidified my decision for joining the Air Force. I knew it was my calling to serve and protect my country."

Although his current assignment isn't on the front lines fighting the war, Blake is committed to doing his best every day.

"I have dedicated my recruiting tenure to finding the most fit, motivated and ruthless Battlefield Airmen I can find and assisting them to fight hard and protect American citizens," he said.

Blake has two mottos that he lives by.

"One is to be a better person today than I was yesterday," he said. "The second is a quote from Sir Winston Churchill, 'History will be kind to me for I intend to write it.' I never want to be in the back or in the middle. I desire to lead from the front and do it better than it has ever been done. I want my children to see me succeed and hopefully they will emulate my actions."
