Air Force opens Dayton Arena Cross Published Jan. 20, 2009 DAYTON, Ohio -- The Air Force kicked off the show as more than 10,000 Arena Cross fans packed the Nutter Center here Jan. 17 to see their favorite dirt bike rider compete in the 2009 arena cross series. The event began with the 338th Recruiting Squadron Commander Lt. Col. Kent Dalton administering the oath of enlistment to 35 young men and women entering the Air Force. During the national anthem, Master Sgt. Robbie Bean and Senior Airman John Ostrowske rappelled from the roof and lowered the American flag. The two are Air Force pararescuemen assigned to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. An honor guard also from Wright-Patterson stood at show center. "It was an amazing night for the Air Force," said Staff Sgt. Chad Tanner, the 338th Recruiting Squadron marketing noncommissioned officer. "We were able to showcase the Air Force's 'extreme' jobs like pararescue and combat control." For the next three hours, the audience was thrilled by the amazing speed of Arena Cross racing -- an adrenaline rush complete with high flying, tight turn racing. During the first intermission, Airman Ostrowske was featured in a live interview and spoke about special tactics jobs available in the Air Force.
