A large group of military members and civilians gathered at The World Space Expo in Cape Canaveral, Fla., Nov. 3 to see 17 young men and women take the Air Force oath of enlistment during a Delayed Enlistment Program swear-in ceremony.

The 45th Space Wing Commander, Brig. Gen. Susan Helms, was invited by the 333rd Recruiting Squadron to administer the oath and was thrilled and honored with the opportunity.

Before the swear in, Helms, spoke about space travel and her career as an astruonaut that includes five Space Shuttle missions and 211 days on the International Space Station.

"I am very proud of each of you and the commitment that you have made to serve," said General Helms.

Twenty-five-year-old Brittany Humphries was one of those taking the oath. She joined the Air Force for the structure of military life, the experience, and because her grandfather also served.

"Flying has always been very exciting to me, and it was a great privilege to be sworn-in by a female astronaut,"  Humphries said.

At the conclusion of her speech, General Helms conducted the time-honored tradition of administering the oath of enlistment that placed them into the Air Force Delayed Entry Program.
