The weather in central Arkansas May 12 was much different than it was Feb. 25, but there was one common trend. The weather on Feb. 25 sent residents in Dumas, Ark., running for shelter. The weather on May 12 was ideal for 30 members of the U.S. Air Force Delayed Entry Program who ran to help provide relief for those ravaged by a tornado just a few weeks earlier.

The future Airmen participated in a 25 mile relay run at Cabot High School to raise money for the American Red Cross relief efforts in south Arkansas. By the day's end, runners raised $800 for the Dumas area relief effort.

Lt. Col. Kenneth Walters, 348th Recruiting Squadron commander, participated in the fundraiser and commented that the event served as a perfect example of the Air Force core value of "Service Before Self."

"These young men and women volunteered to do this, I'm sure they had other things they would rather being doing on a Saturday other than running in the hot sun," he said. "But they chose to put the needs of others before their own, just as they did when they decided to serve their country in the United States Air Force."
