If you looked at her job description, handling active shooter incidents isn't specified. However, for Lara Boyer, the 345th RCS B-flight administrator, it's all in a day's work.

Boyer has a track record of excellence spanning more than two decades. Most recently, on March 17, she earned the 10th Annual David O. Cooke Excellence in Public Administration award at the Air Education and Training Command level. For those fortunate enough to know her, this is no surprise.

She's the cornerstone of her team's success, bridging key personnel absences, enabling her teammates to obtain critical medical care, and providing moral support and mission continuity throughout their convalescences. She seized the opportunity to improve recruiting practices by acquiring the contact information for over 20 county schools and obtained demographic information for inclusion in local recruiting market surveys, saving time and travel costs.

She's also adept at handling whatever crises arise. On Oct. 24, a distraught Army reservist facing a life crisis walked in to the Army National Guard recruiting center, a short distance from the 345 RCS flight office on Naval Support Activity Mid-South in Millington, Tenn. The reservist opened fire, wounding three of his coworkers.

Boyer took immediate action. She secured a recruiter in the flight office who had been caught in the open, and secured the facility by barricading the doors and keeping clear of the windows. She calmed her teammate and reported the situation to her geographically separated chain of command. She continued to provide situation updates until the all-clear was given. Afterwards, she calmly returned to her regularly scheduled duties.

Boyer embodies service-before-self and excellence in all she does - and that includes handling an active shooter incident.
