AWACS Combat Support
380th Air Expeditionary Wing
Video by Tech. Sgt. Colleen Urban
April 15, 2014 | 1:57
When the 968th Expeditionary Airborne Air Control Squadron reached four-thousand combat sorties, it wasn’t just a milestone for the E-3 Sentry crew, it was also a historic sortie—supporting the elections in Afghanistan.
Capt Pina Soundbite: “I went to The Academy, I was there September eleventh. Right after that we stepped into Afghanistan the first time and after I graduated got the opportunity to fly over Iraq and Afghanistan and now to be here to support the Afghan elections, which is essentially what it’s about, you know, uh giving them democracy and freedom, for them to have their first free elections and to be able to uh, fly that particular sortie, to support that particular mission, the reason we’ve been here for so long, uh was an honor. ”
The E-3 Sentry has provided combat support to the area since 2007. It is a low-density, high-demand platform and after reaching four-thousand combat sorties, they are staying around as long as they are needed.
Lt Col Goebel Soundbite: “I foresee an E-3 presence in the CENTCOM AOR, uh for the near term and potentially as well as long term, building relationships with our host nation, uh improving our capabilities, and continually standing by for CENTCOM taskings to provide tactical level command and control anywhere and anytime they need it.”
No matter what the mission, these AWACS crews remain prepared and ready to execute each day.
Capt Jordan Soundbite: “It means so much more than just one more flight and one more hack of a sortie, but it represents something that there is, there are combat activities still going on out here. And that we offer the best support we possibly can to the troops who are either taking fire or the pilots that are putting bombs on target and that’s why there’s no time off, every mission counts, every mission, uh effects someone’s life in one way or another and that’s something we need to be prepared for every time we step to the jet.”
Reporting from Southwest Asia, I’m Technical Sergeant Colleen Urban.
