Water Main Break Forces Evacuation of 88 Lodging Units
Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling
Video by Joseph P Cirone
April 17, 2013 | 2:02
A utility contractor boring a horizontal hole under a roadway at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB) damaged a 12-inch water main three feet under the surface. The high pressure geyser of water caused significant lifting of the earth above and damage to roadway. Two military housing residential areas, a Burger King and a 100-unit temporary lodging facility were directly affected. JBAB’s Emergency Operations Center and Incident Management Team were partially activated to ensure proper coordination, planning and safety during the water emergency. Potable and non-potable water was supplied to both residential housing areas by water buffalos, including some from the D.C. National Guard and the nearby Joint Base Andrews-Naval Air Facility Washington. Personnel occupying 88 temporary lodging units were relocated. U.S. Navy video by Joseph P. Cirone/Released.
