Nellis Air Force Base

July 31, 2012 | 2:11
Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada hosted the first stop of the Joint Civilian Orientation Conference, or JCOC, this year. The JCOC is comprised of civilian leaders from all over the nation representing a variety of professions, including business, education, healthcare and entertainment. The participants toured the base and interacted with various Nellis squadrons and personnel to increase their understanding of how the military operates. - Rene Bardorf Soundbite: “We can introduce them to our troops, our service members and their families and give them an idea of the sacrifices that they make as an all volunteer force.” For many participants, this is their first time being exposed to the interworkings of the military. - Dorothy Aufiero Soundbite: “I have gained such an amazing, um, appreciation of what the armed forces do. I had no idea. I had no idea really, the enthusiasm, they’re so young, I’m just, I’m completely in awe.” The JCOC selection process is extremely competitive with approx 1,000 nominations and only 47 being selected for this year’s conference. The education and hands-on learning helps build new advocates for the Department of Defense. - Rene Bardorf Soundbite: “We hope that they will be more sensitive to the needs of our service members when it comes to employment, education, and wellness for those troops that are coming back to their hometowns.” For JCOC participants, this is far more than a week long trip through the DoD. - Kent Fortune Soundbite: “What I gained is just kind of that reinforcement that the men and women in the Air Force are unbelievable, um, that is doesn’t matter if they are eighteen years old or forty years old, um that they understand what their mission is, they understand that they tie into the bigger mission of the Air Force and that they have huge responsibility.” The exchange between Nellis Airmen and the civilian populace provided a unique experience for all involved in this year’s JCOC.
