The Air Force Academy's class of 2016 started a journey to become leaders of character for the Air force. The class was accepted into the cadet wing during a ceremony that marked the end of their initial phase of training. Jon Zanone has more. To get here, members of the Air Force Academy's class of 2016 had to learn to march, to eat, and even how to wear a gas mask. For the newest members of the cadet wing, this acceptance parade marks the end of basic cadet training and acceptance into a long tradition that dates back to nineteen fifty-nine. C4c Rachel Sanchez, class of 2016, "well, its pretty significant, cause were finally getting accepted into the cadet wing, so I went to the prep school last year and it was nice seeing everyone one, but now I can actually be here" These cadets endured a tough military training program, but they learned a valuable lesson along the way. Sanchez: "it took a lot of hard work and honestly, I probably would not have been able to go through it without everyone else. The teamwork especially. I came thinking 'oh I got this', but, I would not have done it without everyone else here". With six weeks of basic training behind them and eight months of intense academic training ahead, Sanchez looks forward to the little things. Sanchez: " I look forward to not having a wingman to go everywhere with me. I can go places on my own now." Jon Zanone, the united states air force academy Out: the course load for the freshmen cadets, known as 'doolies', is upwards of eighteen semester hours. U.S. air force academy public affairs, USAF academy, co 80840 www.usafa.af.mil (719) 333-7731 News Release #113 Aug. 6, 2012 Trainees join cadet wing at acceptance parade U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - Members of the Air Force Academy's Class of 2016 will pin on their first cadet military rank and swear to uphold the Academy Honor Code at their Acceptance Parade, Aug. 7 at 10 a.m., on the Academy's Stillman Parade Field. The public is invited to attend the parade. Visitors are advised to enter the Academy through the North Gate, located at Exit 156-B off I-25. Visitors are also advised to arrive early, as pre-parade activites and demonstrations begin at 9 a.m., and traffic is expected to be heavy. This parade marks the Class of 2016's acceptance into the Cadet Wing, when they transition from "basic cadet trainees" with no rank, to pinning on their fourth-class cadet rank and becoming fourth class cadets or "doolies." The Honor Code is the minimum standard of behavior and performance expected of all Air Force Academy cadets, and reads: "We will not lie, steal or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does." The newly minted freshman cadets begin their academic semester Aug. 9. Beyond continuing their military training, athletic competitions and character development activities, each new cadet will take 15 semester hours, before ramping up to the average courseload of 18 semester hours in the spring. -30- Available in High Definition.
