Colonel's Personal Experience Drives Bone Marrow Registration Efforts
131st Bomb Wing
Video by Tech. Sgt. Elise Rich
Feb. 8, 2015 | 2:02
In 2009 Missouri Air National Guard member Lieutenant Colonel Janice Kroone received a call from the C.W. Young department of defense bone marrow donor program. The program informed her she was a match for a man who was suffering from leukemia. Responding yes to the call to donate, and within only a few weeks, Colonel Kroone was flown to Washington D.C. The recipient was in desperate need of stem cells, and Colonel Kroone was his last chance for life.
COLONEL KROONE HAD RECEIVED HER CALL TO DONATE ALMOST 10 YEARS AFTER HER INITIAL REGISTRY SIGNUP. HER EXPEIRENCE WITH THE C.W. YOUNG DONOR PROGRAM MOTIVATED HER TO START UP A REGISTRY DRIVE AT WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE. WITH A TEAM OF 131 BOMB WING VOLUNTEERS, COLONEL KROONE RECENTLY SIGNED UP MORE THAN 400 ADDITIONAL BONE MARROW REGISTRANTS, INCLUDING ### FROM THE ACTIVE DUTY HOST WING AND OTHER WHITEMAN TENANT UNITS.
EVERY YEAR, MORE THAN 12,000 PEOPLE ARE DIAGNOSED WITH DISEASES THAT REQUIRE AN INFUSION OF STEM CELLS. ONLY 30 PERCENT OF THESE PEOPLE CAN FIND DONORS WITHIN THEIR FAMILIES ; THE REST OUR LEFT TO FIND MATCHES THROUGH BONE MARROW REGISTRIES. THANKS TO CITIZEN AIRMEN LIKE COLONEL KROONE, POTENTIALLY HUNDREDS OF ADDITIONAL PEOPLE HAVE A CHANCE AT A MATCH FOR LIFE-SAVING BONE MARROW DONATIONS.
