Jiu Jitsu CAF Event
7th Bomb Wing
Video by Airman 1st Class Audrey Merrell
March 12, 2015 | 1:37
Airmen do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as part of a Comprehensive Airman Fitness Event at Dyess AFB.

Script: Recently, Dyess AFB held a Comprehensive Airman’s Fitness event unlike any other. Airmen began doing Jiu Jitsu in the gym and ended on the flight line. Event coordinator Staff Sgt. Travis Sobalvarro named the event “Breaking Red” to symbolize going on the flight line and breaking misconceptions about Jiu Jitsu. He kicked off the event by explaining the benefits of Jiu Jitsu:
“It’s extremely effective for self defense especially in situations where someone might grab you. It gives you a better sense of security, primarily because size doesn’t matter in Jiu Jitsu.”
Participants warmed up with stretches then utilized basic Jiu Jitsu techniques.
Jiu Jitsu instructor, Joseph Tonche Jr. explains how Jiu Jitsu can reduce stress:
“The thing about Jiu Jitsu is like whatever is going on throughout your life, throughout your day, the stresses of work, being in the military. It’s a lot of stress on a lot of people. When you start learning self-defense and grappling it’s like you’re at home with a second family and however long you’re in there you forget about the outside world.“
Participant Senior Airman Garrett Jue from 7EMS found the event beneficial:
“I thought this was fantastic. I hope we can do more of this. I thought this was beneficial to all ranks to grow and challenge themselves.”
The event culminated with the ultimate challenge: participants “broke red” and grappled on the flight line. They learned to bounce back after defeat and face new levels of competition.

Reporting from Dyess AFB, TX, I’m Airman 1st Class Audrey Merrell.
