Air Force Recruiting Service officials here recently announced that the Air Force is canceling the January 2011 Rated Officer Training Selection board as a result of a broader force management process charged with ensuring the Air Force stays within its congressionally mandated end-strength.

End-strength is the maximum number of personnel each service is authorized annually by Congress and limited by Department of Defense budget constraints.

"I fully recognize the stress and uncertainty cancelling the board will create for many of our applicants," said Brig. Gen. Balan Ayyar, Air Force Recruiting Service commander. "We have the highest performing young men and women in history applying for these opportunities. Thankfully there are great Air Force Reserve, Guard and Department of the Air Force civilian opportunities still available."

The number of boards held yearly is determined by how many officers the primary commissioning sources anticipate graduating each year. Due to the Air Force's Force Management program, Air Force Recruiting Service will be limiting line officer accessions per Force Management Program guidance.

Further selection boards will be forthcoming.
