The 339th Recruiting Squadron participated in a ceremony representing the signing of the first military community covenant here Oct. 11, during the halftime show of the Detroit Pistons basketball game.

Lt. Col. Todd Weyerstrass, 339th RCS commander, joined Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, more than a dozen local elected officials, and representatives from the Army, Navy and Marines, in a ceremony designed to remind Detroit metro residents of the men and women serving in the military, and their family members who need community support.

"I was honored to be able to participate in this significant event, especially because of what it means for our area, and the fact I was here representing the United States Air Force," Lt. Col. Weyerstrass said.

The community covenant is an Army program, but it extends to the other military services, recognizing that many community efforts support all servicemembers and their families regardless of the uniform they wear.

The military community covenant is designed to develop and foster effective state and community partnerships and improve the quality of life for military members and their families, both at their current duty stations and as they transfer from state to state.

The 339th RCS, located in Clinton Township, Mich., covers a 54,000 square-mile area that includes Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.
